Shadow Mountain Gallery, an artists’ owned gallery, was founded in 1990 and offers its 40 member artists a platform to showcase and sell their work while gaining recognition from a broad audience of visitors to the Gallery and the Gallery website.
For its first five years, Shadow Mountain Gallery was located by the historic yellow barn in Conifer, Colorado. In July 1995, the Gallery relocated to the Adobe Creek Artists Center on Highway 74 in Kittredge, Colorado near Evergreen. Our new home as of May 1, 2004 is just two miles up the road in Downtown Evergreen at 28186 Highway 74 (Main Street) amidst fun dining and unique shopping with the creek rushing by just a stone’s throw away, and some of the world’s best skiing, fishing and hiking close at hand.
Shadow Mountain Gallery is owned and operated by a core group of 40 artists who create art in a variety of media: Acrylic, oil and watercolor painting, pastels, collage, photography, hand-made paper, pottery, jewelry, glass, wood-carving and bronze sculptures. Many of the gallery’s artists have won awards in local art shows and calendar contests, and in state, regional and national juried art competitions and exhibitions.
Shadow Mountain Gallery has space for artists in jewelry, glass, pottery, fiber, photography and sculpture. Each artist is an owner and therefore involved in many aspects of the gallery. Member requirements are: $75 membership, rent is $45/month, each artist works one day/month 10:00-5:30 (may be split into 2 half-day sessions.) Training is provided. The gallery retains 35% of all sales.
Walking in the door of Shadow Mountain Gallery, one is struck by the variety of creativity. SMG hosts seasonal theme shows that challenge gallery artists to capture and express the beauty and bounty of Colorado. The gallery blossoms during the “ Springtime in the Mountains” showcase. It thunders during the Evergreen Rodeo with a “Western Art “ exhibit and sings on warm summer days when artists capture the joyful sight of mountain “Hummingbirds & Friends” in their chosen medium. Every fall when hundreds of visitors flock to the mountains to view the Aspens changing colors, the gallery’s glorious “Aspen Showcase” treats visitors to a wealth of colors, textures, shapes and imagery that helps art lovers savor the season.
In November and December the gallery explodes with “Holiday Treasures,” a special showcase that challenges gallery artists to let loose their creative spirit, broaden the scope of their normal work and even step outside their regular media. It results in an expanded selection of truly one-of-a- kind, handmade ornaments, wearable art, home furnishings and holiday gifts.
Spend some time at SMG and you’ll find the creations of numerous highly acclaimed award-winning artists with national reputations and local talent. Keeping an artist’s run consignment gallery operational since 1991 without relying on grants & donations like most non-profit arts organizations takes teamwork and effort. Some gallery artists have been part of the team for since its inception. Others, new to displaying their work in a gallery environment are mentored to help nurture a professional approach to creating and exhibiting their art.
The gallery has high standards for the pieces on display. Prospective artists must submit work to a jury of their peers, have a unique identifiable style and a high degree of technical skill. Each artist making a commitment to play an active role helping the gallery thrive. Only a few, select artists may be accepted in to the gallery each year.
Whatever the season and whatever the reason, when visitors and area residents find themselves near downtown Evergreen, a visit to Shadow Mountain Gallery is always worthwhile. With a different artist staffing the gallery each day this place overflows with creative energy and each piece being offered for sale holds a story waiting to be told.
